Semi-Intensive ESL Program
Who participates? Non-native speakers of English of all proficiency levels may attend this program, and it is designed for participants who are already in the United States. For example:
- visiting faculty
- exchange visitors
- employees of local companies
- residents of Lexington and surrounding areas
- graduate students
- spouses of graduate students and faculty
- and anyone else who does not need a student visa
Can I take the TOEFL? Yes. At the end of each class, students have the option to take the institutional TOEFL offered every 8-weeks. The cost is $20. The price is the class and the TOEFL is less than the price of just the TOEFL when signing up apart from our program!
What does this program involve? There are five hours of programming per week, focusing mostly on the general language skills of non-native speakers of English (listening, speaking, reading, and grammar). Because of time constraints, the skill of writing is not addressed. Usually, two levels of proficiency are offered: a lower group and an upper group. A placement test is given prior to the first class to determine levels. This program does not have tests or grades.
When? Classes are usually Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:30. During the academic year there are four six-week sessions and during the summer there are two four-week sessions.
