Semi-Intensive ESL Program

Who participates? Non-native speakers of English of all proficiency levels may attend this program, and it is designed for participants who are already in the United States. For example:

  • visiting faculty
  • exchange visitors
  • employees of local companies
  • residents of Lexington and surrounding areas
  • graduate students
  • spouses of graduate students and faculty
  • and anyone else who does not need a student visa

What does this program involve? There are five hours of programming per week, focusing mostly on the general language skills of non-native speakers of English (listening, speaking, reading, and grammar). Because of time constraints, the skill of writing is not addressed. Usually, two levels of proficiency are offered: a lower group and an upper group. A placement test is given prior to the first class to determine levels. This program does not have tests or grades.

When? Classes are usually Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:30. During the academic year there are four six-week sessions and during the summer there are two four-week sessions.

Can I take the TOEFL? Yes. At the end of each class, students have the option to take the institutional TOEFL offered every 8-weeks. The cost is $20.
