The University of Kentucky (UK) is Kentucky's comprehensive institution of higher education. The Lexington campus began with 273 students in 1876 and now has more than 34,000 students. The 17 academic colleges at UK offer liberal arts and professional courses to students from every county in Kentucky, every state in the United States, and 75 countries of the world.
Today, more than 8,000 faculty and staff teach and administer programs that lead to bachelor's degrees in 117 majors, master's degrees in 70 areas, and doctorate degrees in 47 areas of study. UK has 91,000 alumni worldwide.
